Industry-First 55% Recycled Steel Parts Debut

Chery and Shougang jointly developed 55% recycled steel auto parts, achieving an industry-first launch and moving into production application, advancing high-recycled-content automotive steel from material research to mass production. A launch ceremony themed 'Shou-Rui Together, Green Future' was held on October 13 at Chery's Longshan Test Center.

The event was jointly unveiled by Gu Jinhai, dean of the Materials Research Institute at Chery Global Technology Innovation Center, and Han Yun, vice president of the Shougang Group Technology Research Institute.

Environmental Benefits of 55% Recycled Steel

Each tonne of recycled steel used reduces CO2 emissions by about 1.2 tonnes and iron ore use by about 1.6 tonnes, supporting closed-loop recycling of automotive steel. Wastewater, waste residue and waste gas can be reduced by up to about 36%, 46% and 41% respectively.

The 55% recycled steel uses a globally first-of-its-kind process, the converter high-scrap-ratio low-carbon high-quality steel technology, which can cut carbon emissions by up to 50%.

Validation and Application in Key Components

The 55% recycled steel has passed validation and can be applied to all key components including body panels and structural parts, meeting safety and quality standards.

Chery has also applied a '100% recycled aluminum + heat-treatment-free + integrated die-casting' technology, the first to use 100% recycled aluminum in key safety structural automotive parts, and it has been scaled into Chery's mass-production models. Measurements show the technology reduces material-stage carbon emissions by 80% compared with primary aluminum and manufacturing-stage emissions by 97.5% compared with heat-treatment processes.
