Scaled application stage

China's intelligent connected vehicle industry is accelerating from demonstration verification into a new stage of scaled application, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said at the 2026 World Intelligent Connected Vehicle Conference, which recently opened in Beijing.

The first batch of L3 conditionally automated models has begun road trials in specific areas. Demonstration applications including robotaxis, smart logistics, mining sites and airports are being rolled out.

Test infrastructure and standards

China has opened 57,000 kilometers of test and demonstration roads nationwide, deployed more than 60,000 sets of intelligent equipment and accumulated over 220 million kilometers of test mileage.

The country has published 90 intelligent connected vehicle standards and issued 62 standard project plans, and has built 17 national-level test demonstration zones while advancing 20 vehicle-road-cloud integration pilot cities. More than 20,000 test licenses have been issued.

Adoption and next steps

More than 70% of new passenger cars are equipped with L2 combined driving assistance.

The ministry said it and related departments issued the 15th Five-Year Plan for the intelligent connected new energy vehicle industry, which targets new energy passenger cars and commercial vehicles reaching 70% and 40% respectively of new vehicle sales in their segments.

The ministry plans to support leading companies in forming innovation consortia, strengthen common platforms and promote AI across the chain. It will prudently advance intelligent connected vehicle market access and road pilot programs, deepen vehicle-road-cloud integration pilots, and accelerate standards for automated parking and data security under a special vehicle quality improvement initiative.
