Li Shufu speaks at Shanghai conference
Geely Holding Group Chairman Li Shufu attended the opening of the 2026 Sustainable Global Leaders Conference in Shanghai on October 20 and delivered a keynote speech titled "Innovation Drives Green Transformation, Pooling Strength to Build a Resilient Future." The conference is themed "Building a Resilient Future Together: Global Governance, Innovation-Driven Development and Industrial Upgrading" and gathered more than 300 guests from around the world.
Li presented the company's methanol electric route as a Chinese carbon-reduction approach. Geely Holding Group has set a 2030 vision of "leading a green and intelligent mobility ecosystem," with the overall goal of achieving full-chain carbon neutrality by 2045.
Two decades of methanol development
Geely has explored the methanol electric route for more than two decades and has built a full-chain green methanol technology and industrial system covering green methanol production, powertrain research and development, vehicle manufacturing, refueling facilities and carbon capture.
According to Geely, producing one ton of green methanol can absorb 1.375 tons of carbon dioxide. The company cited Global Methanol Industry Association forecasts that the global methanol market could reach 500 million tons by 2050, with green methanol accounting for more than 70%.
Operating fleet and emissions results
Geely has put more than 60,000 methanol electric vehicles into operation, and their cumulative driving mileage has exceeded 25 billion kilometers. Compared with diesel power, Geely says its methanol electric technology reduces PM pollutant emissions by 98% and carbon monoxide by 88%, while cutting comprehensive energy cost by 32% to 52%.
