September registrations by vehicle type
Shanghai recorded 49,583 total vehicle registrations in September 2026, up 1.31% year on year and 27.68% month on month, according to the Shanghai Economic Information Center's automotive industry research office.
By category, new energy small passenger vehicles led with 36,372 registrations. Small passenger vehicles other than sedans recorded 5,284, domestically produced sedans 2,811, and imported small passenger vehicles including sedans 1,966. Large passenger vehicles recorded 745 registrations. Small trucks recorded 1,605 registrations and large trucks 800.
January to September cumulative figures
Shanghai's cumulative vehicle registrations for January to September 2026 totaled 340,684, down 1.28% year on year.
Within that total, new energy small passenger vehicles recorded 230,703 cumulative registrations, up 13.88% year on year.
Imported vehicles by source country in September
Among imported vehicles excluding new energy models, Germany was the leading source country in September 2026 with 1,036 registrations, followed by Japan with 690 and the United Kingdom with 201.
